Flight Explorer Helps Air Care Alliance’s Humanitarian Pilots Save Lives
Provides Flight Tracking Software to Help Volunteer Pilots With Time-Critical Medical Transportation Nationwide
Fairfax, VA – July 24, 2002 – Flight Explorer, the world's leading provider of Internet-based real-time flight tracking information, reporting and display products, donates its flight tracking software -- Flight Explorer Professional® -- to organizations whose pilots volunteer their time and aircraft to help medical facilities nationwide transport time-critical patients, donated organs and supplies.
Every day, volunteer pilots and mission coordinators use the software to determine which airborne planes are closest to patients in need and/or medical facilities to alert the pilot who can get there soonest. The pilots are part of the Air Care Alliance, a nationwide organization that comprises 25 regional groups of volunteer humanitarian pilots. Groups include Angel Flight, Air Lifeline, Flying Docs, Children’s Flight of Hope, Mercy Med Flight, Volunteer Mercy Pilots and the Volunteer Pilots Association.
With only a personal computer and Internet access, commercial users and others providing aviation services can use Flight Explorer Professional® to track aircraft anywhere over the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), and Canada. Users see a graphic depiction of planes, weather and other data over North America or they can narrow the view to an area as small as a single local airport and a single plane. Flight Explorer Professional updates aircraft positions every minute and refreshes screen views every 10 seconds.
Doug Vincent, chairman of the Air Care Alliance, said, “Flight Explorer is a fantastic service. It saves lives -- and the pilots love it. We set up information about our volunteer planes into the Flight Explorer software. When we get an emergency call, we know who is in the air and we can get them to the scene quickly.” He added, “It’s also important for the families of the pilots. If the pilot is late in returning home because of medical, weather or other factors, we can track the plane instantly and assure the family that the pilot is safe.”
Walt Kross, CEO of Flight Explorer, said, “Shaving critical time off of a flight – or making it safer and more cost effective -- is always important, of course, and can make a real difference to aviation-related organizations and their passengers. But we’re particularly excited when we hear how Air Care Alliance pilots save lives every day using Flight Explorer as one of their tools. The work they do is truly impressive and important—and we at Flight Explorer are delighted to be part of this extraordinary endeavor.”
